January 2018

To the South Central Community:

Welcome to 2018!  Happy New Year!  I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas break.

This arctic blast of bone-chilling weather is making our return to school in early January difficult.  I wanted to share with you, though, some of the decision-making processes I utilize in determining a school delay or cancellation.  First, let me say it is not an easy decision, nor one that I take lightly.  I think very seriously about the safety of our students when making these decisions.  I consider the bus riders...will these students be safe at their bus stops?  Will the buses be safe on the roads; are the roads passable, and are the bus turn-arounds clear?  To help in this decision, I personally drive about 20 miles of our district on winter mornings,  trying to determine answers to the aforementioned questions.  I also consider the student drivers...will these students be safe driving to school?  I also consider temperature, particularly wind-chill temperatures.  (And, no, there is no “magical” wind-chill  number!)  Sometimes, a 2-hour delay is very beneficial--the temperature is forecasted to rise, the roadcrew have an opportunity to clear roads, and daylight is critically helpful to bus drivers.  Lastly, I am fortunate that there is a strong network of area superintendents to communicate with during these decision-making mornings.

Winter Sports Season is in full-swing.  Be sure to check the district website, or contact the school, for a junior high or high school schedule.  Our athletes give 100% every day at practices, and to have spectators watch them compete is momentum to keep giving.  Thanks for your continued support of our athletic programs.

I continue to simply enjoy my position as superintendent in this awesome district.  When I walk through the halls of both buildings, and stop into classrooms occasionally, I continue to be excited about the awesome enthusiasm for teaching and learning that happens continuously and regularly.  When I am stopped by community members, the typical response is one of pride for the school system.  This makes me proud to be a Trojan!

Check back to this webpage for periodic updates from me on the activities and successes of our school.  I will attempt to provide new messages monthly.

Together we can,

Ben Chaffee, Jr.
